Privacy Policy

Effective on public launch · Version 1.0

AussieDate is operated by The Handy Man To Know (ABN 70 545 298 533) (we, us, our). We are committed to protecting your privacy and to handling your personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). This policy is consistent with the privacy approach across our family of services and explains what we collect, why, how we use and disclose it, and your rights.

Sensitive information. A matchmaking service necessarily involves sensitive information — for example, information about your relationships and, if you choose to provide it, your sexual orientation. Under the Privacy Act we only collect sensitive information with your consent. By providing this information and using the Service, you consent to us collecting and using it to make introductions as described below. You can withdraw consent by contacting us or closing your account.

2. How we collect it

We collect information directly from you when you sign up, build your profile, use the Service, contact us, or attend an event. We collect technical information automatically as you use the Service. Where it is unreasonable or impracticable to collect information directly from you, we will only collect it from others as permitted by law (for example, a referral link tells us who invited you).

3. Why we collect and use it

We use your personal information to:

  • create and manage your account and verify your email;
  • build your profile and calculate compatibility to suggest potential matches;
  • facilitate opt-in introductions, messaging, date planning and events;
  • improve matching using the private feedback you give after dates;
  • process memberships and payments;
  • keep the Service safe — including responding to reports, preventing fraud and abuse, and enforcing our Terms;
  • respond to your enquiries and provide support; and
  • comply with our legal obligations.

We will not use your information for a materially different purpose without your consent or unless permitted by law.

4. When we disclose it

We disclose personal information:

  • To other members — only the profile information appropriate to introductions, and only in line with our double opt-in design. A one-sided expression of interest does not reveal your identity to the other person. Your email, phone number and private feedback are never shown to other members.
  • To service providers who help us operate the Service under confidentiality obligations — for example, payment processing (Stripe), email/SMS delivery, hosting and infrastructure.
  • Where required or authorised by law, or to protect the safety of members or the public.

We do not sell your personal information.

5. Overseas disclosure

We store your information on secure servers and keep the AussieDate member database logically separated from our other systems. Some of our service providers may store or process limited information outside Australia — for example, our payment processor Stripe (United States). Where this occurs, we take reasonable steps to ensure the information is handled consistently with the APPs.

6. Direct marketing

We may send you service messages (such as match notifications and account emails). With your consent, we may also send you news and offers about AussieDate. Any marketing message will include an easy way to opt out, consistent with the Spam Act 2003 (Cth). You can opt out at any time without affecting your membership.

7. Security & data breaches

We take reasonable steps to protect your information, including encryption in transit, hashed/encrypted storage of passwords, access controls, and keeping the AussieDate member database logically separated from our other systems. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. If a data breach is likely to result in serious harm, we will notify affected individuals and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) as required by the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.

8. How long we keep it

We keep your information while your account is active and for as long as needed for the purposes above or to meet our legal obligations. When you close your account we will delete or de-identify your personal information within a reasonable period, except where we are required by law to retain certain records (for example, limited payment, tax or safety records, which we keep only for as long as the law requires).

9. Access & correction

You can access and update most of your information directly in the Service. You may also ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct it, by contacting us. We will respond within a reasonable time and may need to verify your identity first. If we refuse access or correction, we will tell you why.

10. Cookies

We use essential cookies to keep you signed in and to run the Service securely. We do not use third-party advertising trackers. See our Cookie Policy for details and how to control cookies.

11. Children

The Service is strictly for adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we become aware that we have collected information from a minor, we will delete it and close the account.

12. Complaints

If you have a privacy concern or complaint, please contact us first (details below) and we will investigate and respond within a reasonable time. If you are not satisfied, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au or 1300 363 992.
